In February 1839 the largest successful escape form Port Arthur occurred. Eight men succeeded in making their getaway in broad daylight from under the noses of special sentries posted to prevent their attempt, after their plan had been given away to the Commandant. This is the tale of their incredible exploit, of their 1,000 mile journey in an open whale-boat, as told directly from the surviving documents. It is the most remarkable escape story in Van Diemen's Land convict history.
